Bridport Peer Support Group

There is a new Peer Support Group for Bridport. It meets on Thursday mornings from 11am to 12.30pm at the Unitarian Chapel close to the centre of the town. Everyone who attends has experienced problems with mental health and you know that you will be walking into an atmosphere of deep understanding and support. The group is run by volunteers and there are no qualified medical professionals present.

The demand for such a group is clearly there and each week between 4 and 8 people - male and female and from different age groups - have turned up. Tea and coffee are available and occasionally biscuits if someone is feeling extravagant!

Sometimes it's just a place to chat, sometimes to explain mental health problems and worries to a sympathetic and understanding audience, sometimes to hear how others have tackled their issues and how they may be making small positive steps forward. Whatever people talk about we make sure that:

  • Discussions remain completely confidential to the group
  • We respect everyone's views and do not criticise
  • We allow people to speak as much or as little as they wish

There is no need to register for the group, people can just turn up. However, please ring the Forum on 01305 257172 or email Peer Support if you want to find out more and see if it is right for you. Following this, they may put you in direct touch with a group member to have an informal chat.

The Unitarian Chapel is also known as the Chapel in the Garden. It's at 49 East Street and is the one which is set back from the road with a small garden and path leading to the front door, between the old Chez Cuddy café and the Literary & Scientific Institute building. We meet in a cosy room behind the Chapel - enter the main front door and walk through the Chapel to the door at the back (far left).

Testimonials
