Types of Mental Illness

There are many types of illness that can affect people. Here we are covering the most common and broadly known conditions that also have the highest number of sufferers. We will be adding details for other mental health disorders in due course.

Each link will take you to the medical model description of that illness. Personal accounts of individuals living with a particular mental health problem and the perspective of carers, relatives and supporters can be found by clicking on the relevant tabs.

Misinterpreting Symptoms

It is important to stress that many symptoms are not exclusive. You may have symptoms associated with one condition but infact be suffering from another; for example, in some cases experiencing psychosis when in a state of severe depression. Because of this, it can be difficult to know for sure exactly what is wrong if a formal diagnosis has not yet been given.

Don't Struggle Alone

If you have not been diagnosed and feel you may have a mental health problem, or are concerned for the well-being of someone you know, seek professional medical advice for the treatment and support you may need. This is especially important with respect to suicidal thoughts or evidence of psychosis.
