Local Service User Groups in Dorset
There are a number of independent local service user groups in West Dorset which offer an alternative to mainstream mental health services.
The Forum assists these groups as much as possible as they offer valuable independent support for individuals. The vital ingredient of the service user groups is the mutual support and understanding offered to and by people, who have been through similar experiences.
People can find the sharing of experiences and peer support extremely beneficial. The Forum is currently developing its own model of peer support groups. A pilot group has been started in Weymouth for people experiencing anxiety and depression. In addition, peer support and community activities, outside mainstream mental health services, is the primary objective of the Sports and Leisure Activity Programme.
